Irwin Schuman acquires land in Palm Springs and begins building what would become a true desert icon. Inspired by European charm and the glamour of Las Vegas, the Riviera Resort opens in 1958 — the first hotel in the area designed with a spoke-wheel layout by architect Homer A. Rissman.
The Riviera becomes a playground for the rich and famous. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Raquel Welch, Desi Arnaz, and Elvis Presley all walk its halls, while acts like the Stan Kenton and Count Basie Orchestras bring the nights to life.
The hotel earns a starring role in the film Palm Springs Weekend, confirming its status as an essential backdrop to California's golden era.
From black-tie galas to intimate performances, the Riviera remains a beacon of elegance and entertainment, blending timeless appeal with Palm Springs' ever-evolving style.
